Just as a courtesy if you are going to vote 4 or less on a photo try to leave a comment on it as to why. I know with one of my shots i have in a challenge right now my average is a 4.1 with no comments and i though it was a good shot. I try to leave comments on any shot that i dont score highly (in addition to ones i love as well) it takes just a few extra minutes but it is very helpful

I feel your pain. JUST when you think you have a winner, boom, it tanks. I know my candlelight is very good, and very unique, but its tanking and staggering around a 5.0. I thought my Christmas would do bad, and its much higher then expected at a 5.3 when I expected a 4.9 with one comment. No comments on my candlelight, and I thought it would be inandated with them. I have high hopes for my cheese and my visual puns, but my high hopes don't reflect in the scoring so far, so who knows. LOL....

Anyway, there have been photos I have voted low and commented on and found some real nasties in my email. LOL....I don't mind that, but I think others might and reason being why they may not comment. Just a thought, but a 4 isn't something I comment on either. I only comment on my highest ones and my 1's and 2's. On 4's I don't leave comment, as sometimes there are quite a few of those.

what you said makes a lot of sence rose... its just hard when you're trying to get over that hum from 4's to 5's and are getting no feedback on them.

I hear ya. When my candlelight dropped from a 6.0 to a 4.9 after only 4 votes..LOL..I KNEW it was going to have to take an onslaught of high votes just to get back to that 6. It is still floating at a 5.1 to 5.0 now, and that is after 50-60+ votes. I think the first voters really set the standard on how the rest of the votes will effect it going up and staying up. Once you have a 6 tank to below a 5, and the majority of others stay in that 5-6 range, it takes a LOT to get it to rise again. Usually, it doesn't. So I have no high hopes now that it will zoom back up. I thought it was really something, but seems its only middle of the road. NO comments either, and yet my Christmas got one. Said it was in good focus...LOL..and that made me smile, because that is the reason I thought it would tank. I didn't think I DID get the best focus on it, no matter how hard I tried.

Oh well, its a crap shoot. What I do is set my own personal goals for scores. I don't care if I get comments or not, so I have no complaints either way. If I make my own personal set score, I am happy and set another goal next time depending on subject and challenge. If I don't make it, then my only competition is myself. It is much easier to compete with yourself then some of the pros on here anyway *tee hee*, so it eases the blows.

Sometimes the problem is that it's hard to articulate what you don't like about the photo. I comment when I feel I have something useful to say and can figure out how to put it into understandable words. If I don't think I can help the photographer, I don't comment...what would be the point? I might confuse them or insult them by stating the obvious. There are a lot of different people who use this site: children, people who don't speak english as their first lanquage. I'm not going to say anything unless I feel I can say it well, so that anyone could understand.

i feel (its my view only) that forcing people to vote on 20 percent to count their vote is one reason you may not get comments. Imagine in a challenge where 200 enteries, i need to vote at least 40 votes to count my vote, but if i am leaving comment too i will take lot of time to vote 40, and human beings are lazy by nature. So i will rush to finish my 40 votes than i will think whether i can comment or not.
Whether what i said above it true or not, this laziness factor do come in.
