Not to be alarmist, but you might want to check this out Safety Tips for Dogs

I'd heard that tinsel could be deadly to cats, and it seems that applies to dogs, as well.

As far as Christmas trees go. If I had the space, I'd get my cat it's own tree, secure it so it's climbable and decorate with catnip toys. Housecats are often bored, and a forbidden temptation, such as a Christmas tree, is asking them to deny their instincts.
