What could I have done to make this pic better? Why are the lights out of focus on the left and not the right? What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks in advance.

what settings are you using?

obviously it could be a wide apeature
if you used a long shutter, the trees could have been shaken by wind and blurred

The lights on the left are not out of focus; they are MOVING. Something made them move over there. If you use magnifier to go in deep on that side, you'll see this clearly.
