I have been beating my head against the wall for the last two days, trying to come up with a great idea to shoot for the Christmas Catalog challenge, and have run in to the same problem that I do on every other challenge that does not involve landscapes. So I thought I would bring this question out to the general public to see how you all do it.

What inspires you with ideas for your photography? Are most of the images that you submit for challenges new ideas, or are they things that were thought up before and then waited for the perfect challenge? Any response would be greatly appreciated.

For me, it's usually my experience, guts, and mood. I come up with the idea while sitting in the toilet for my daily dump. Unfortunate for me, I feel like I've got the right idea, but the pictures won't come out like the ones in my head.

I read the challenge description and something occurs to me or it doesn't. Sometimes though, in the process of creating the shot I think I want I discover a much better idea along the way.

Another question to add in also, how much work will you go through to get your idea captured?

For me, I try to use left over in my house if the idea needs creativity. If I don't have it, I limit myself to spending no more than 100 baht(US$2.50) to buy things for it, which usually gets me plenty of stuff. If I have to travel, forget it.

I am inspired by the works of other photogs and writers. I love brian andreas (www.storypeople.com). I also really enjoy imogene cuningham and loretta lux.
for challenges I try to think outside the box and try to find something that almost doesn't fit but then does when you think about. my scores are not always the greatist, but meh...when it comes to this site I take pictures that I like. I take pictures for other people to often with school and work at sears port. studio to take pictures for other people here too.

This is not related to photos but i think its worth mentioning. Due to my passion with paintings and i have been learning how to compose and paint, i have this habit that whenver i see any magazine i at least brawse it. And the wonderful thing is i can tell you if i have seen any pic before in my life (after 1990). Or you can say that if i came across a pic in say in year 1995 and if i see it again now i can tell i have seen this pic, and most probably where. I am in habit of remembering them. This really helps me in composing. Anyway i do keep cuttings of interesting things i see. I have cuttings from mag , news papers that dates back to as old as 1986-87. Whenver i have to compose something i just go through them or brawse as much as magazines etc possible. It is slow process for me, but before painting i go through everything in my head, then a final thing begins.
I am new to photography so can not really say about how photographers here do.

Mine is usually VERY impulsive, and then my own OCD kicks in where I won't stop till I get the shot.

Sometimes, if I am a bit mystified by the challenge, I do research for inspiration. But most times I just think of a slang saying for it, or I see something in my mind from an old movie, or I just see something on my own shelf that inspires me.

My stadegy though is that first and foremost, the subject of the challenge inspires me. I usually run with my first idea and get the photo up. After that, and if I see something better to do, then I reshoot. Usually it stays though.

I was thinking about this very subject today when trying to come up with a last minute entry for cheese. I thought to myself, couldn't I just enter a nicely lit well focused block of cheese? Does it really need to be something no one in the history of man kind has ever done before? Is this a "most creative idea" contest or a photography contest? I wonder how a technically perfect picture would do if the subject was something simple presented in a simple way.

The Holiday Catalog got me thinking about it too. The majority of photography shots out there are simple product shots. Yet we seem to grade people down if their idea isn't way out there (landscapes and some portraits aside). I'm a photographer not an advertising agency, why should I have to come up with a new brilliant idea that's never been done before each week. Can't I just take a quality photo?

I think in the catalog contest it is really just for fun. Yes, you can take product shots and still have it be technically perfect (although mine isn't :( but I am taking my chances). With cheese, it is all about good shots and creativity there I think. Sure, I mean, you can take a photo of a nice peice of cheese in gorgeous lighting, and it may be a great shot, but I think creativity in both photo and title may just outwit, outlast, and out play your shot. It's not "always" about 2 minute shutter speeds and perfect composition, etc sometimes. Sometimes people just have to let go and let the juices flow.

PS: Sorry about the outwit, outlast, and outplay remark. I'm watching Survivor, so .....LOL.
