I'm wondering how you guys decide whether to mark a comment to your challenge as "helpful" or not....

The Speed challenge is my first submission, and I have so far received 10 comments to my submission; however most of them are "I liked this and that" and "Fantastic, how did you do it?" type of comments.

I was under the impression that I should only mark a comment as "helpful" if it offered some constructive criticism or something to that effect that will help me improve my photography, but while browsing through some of the photos in the galleries I find that some photographers just mark "helpful" to all the "I like your photo" comments.

Personally, I think I'll stick to my personal stand on this unless someone else has a compelling reason for me... but I'd still like to hear your thoughts/comments on this.

Thanks,

Just like voting, you (and everyone else) are free to apply whatever criteria you like to this decision.

I recently figured out that I was marking as helpful comments which I could tell pertained to that photo in particular. However, I'll sometimes mark an "I like this ..." as helpful when the photo I liked is otherwise being trashed, and the comment helps me feel better.

I tend to mark all comments as helpful unless they are rude.

I think if someone has made the effort to comment on one of my photos they diserve a tick. It may encourage them to make more comments which are sometimes few and far between.

If someone says they like my photo, its not really helpful. If they tell me why, it is.

However, if my score is doing well and I'm in a good mood I will mark any commect as helpful :)

I think its great that people will take their time and leave a comment So I mark all comments helpful Even if they just say I like it or I dont like it I think its great to get other peoples opinion ;) And most of them are really helpful :)

I almost always find the comments useful, unless of course they are downright rude and abusive. You don't even have to agree with a comment to find it useful; when you get a comment you don't agree with you need to step aside and try and look at it from their perspective; this is part of the learning process.

I just finished voting for about 33% of the submissions (still another 67% to go...) and after taking time to enter some comments, I think you all have valid points about people taking the effort to make comments. Hmm... I think I'll be more open-minded about the comments I receive from now on....

With the low number of comments coming my way I will have a tendency to mark all of them as helpful just because they had the initiative to make one. I have three comments in each of the current challenges, the lowest ever for me. I guess my begginers luck has run out.
