With regards to the original post, I'm a willing participant in the gauntlet madness and I don't have the LEAST desire to see the DPC rules modified or expanded to allow this sort of stuff. It's fun to engage in, but if I wanted to do it seriously there are umpteen sites out there where I can stretch my wings. I'm not good enough for those places though, nor do I wish to take the time to be.

I enjoy engagiung int he occasional lighthearted photomanipulation contest within this site, where the people I usually play against are more my level. Of course, I drew ken for this gauntlet so I was outclassed from the get-go, but hey, it's still fun!

Still, let me repeat that: IMO, loosening the rules to allow multiple-image compositions in DPC would be a serious mistake.

Spoken like a 5 to 1 underdog. ;-) Oh, trash-talkin thread is down the hall, sorry.

I'll second that about loosening the rules, but I still like the occasional anything goes challenge like DPC Album Cover one (I wasn't here for that though).

(How? You leave one out in the sun, it gets all brown, starts sproutin' little white hairs? :) )

Nordlys, who himself seems to be starting to sprout little white hairs

Why must everyone (here) assume that loosening of the rules makes it all digital art and the photography part goes away?
Why (here come the works) cant 800 pixels work here?

Samples from fuji mugs, where 150k and 800x800 coexist nicely...
9 photos make this one image

2 shots combined (not all that well IMO)

this one is pushing the envelope a bit.

But look there - there are NO rules other than explain what you did and take it in the timeframe - and let the community decide how far is too far.

Perhaps linking to multiple examples of over the edge digital art wasn't the best way to set up your initial question?

LIke I said earlier, I would agree to ocasional challenges where you used way advanced editing but not for every day challenges. I cant even figure out how to clone anything with GIMP yet, let alone try anything like the Gauntlet for every challenge.

For all the purist / "keep your PS brush out of the challenges" folks, DPC has had several exception challenges in the past and I think they were well received.

I can't find any threads from the time-frame, but I don't recall the first "no holds barred" open editing challenge, The Future, being at all well received, as evidenced by the description to the follow-up no-editing challenge The Past: Rules: To attempt to recover from last week's mistake (the Future Challenge)...

But then, the context was a little heated. That was before the advanced editing rules, and those who were pushing for more advanced editing options within the bounds of maintaining photographic integrity were unhappy because this didn't accurately portray what they wanted, and the limited editing purists didn't like it because it proved what loosening the rules would lead to (digital art, the end of the world, stuff like that).

As we are all still here, the world didn't end with having such a challenge. Every once in a while I think we need to let our hair down. These challenges could be added as additional challenges on a somewhat regular basis as are the speed and free study challenges.

My intent was not to take away anything from this site, nor did I want to bring any of the rules into question. I simply wanted to see how much interest there was in this type of game, and to also see what could happen if the photoshop masters were allowed to let their hair down. Personally I would not change a thing about this site, and I think the current rules and challenges work great as is. I'm glad the participants have had a good time working on my little experiment, but I would like to emphasize the fact that this experiment was orchestrated entirely without the approval of site admins or SC.

The great thing about this site is that it is dedicated to photography. I think if the rules were changed, part of the appeal of this site would be lost. The site admins and SC are a great bunch and allow a lot of flexibility. The threads I created could've easily been locked, or they could have asked me to discontinue this experiment. They have not done so which, IMHO, shows just how open they are to new things. I would like to thank the powers that be for the opportunity to carry on my sick little experiment on their site. Let's just try to remember the focus of this site... Photography.

Again... Thanks again to all the participants and voters. My little experiment has almost come to an end. I will probably try another variation of this at a later date (drawing from what I've learned this go 'round) if it's OK with the admins and SC. In no way am I suggesting or condoning changes in the way this site functions as a digital photography site.

Thanks for reading my ramblings... now I'm off to count votes!
