My topic is "helpful" comments.

After going through some, I'm convinced - people like nice comments. They don't like the truth sometimes. And they always hate nasty ones.

Surprise.

I was noticing how many times I'm the ONLY commenter people don't mark helpful. WTF. "I dislike x thing about your pic, but otherwise it's a good shot. Nice lighting, maybe would have tried Y." Not helpful. "good shot!" Helpful.

Please! *laugh* (this doesn't include those who mark everything or nothing as helpful)

i try to be consistent in my "helpful" marking.. one word comments like "nice!" or "good shot!" aren't very helpful to me even though they boost my ego a bit.. anythign else that goes more in-depth i mark as helpful..good or bad.

If somebody goes to the trouble to leave me a comment I always find it helpful and mark it so.

I force myself to put emotion aside and ask "did this comment teach me something?"
The lesson may be a photographic epiphany, or simply a hint as to why my image is/is not getting my intended message across. If the commenter has conveyed something of value, even if another commenter has said essentially the same thing, then the comment is helpful.

First of all, all comments you have given me have been very helpful, Mav! And I'm always surprised how many you leave and how indepth they are.

My position is that almost every comment I've received has been helpful. Any comment left to me has caused me to reflect on how the commenter perceived the photograph, and so was helpful. I'd like to have a *very helpful* box to mark, though!

Thanks, but I think I just type too fast and never shut up! lol

My only intent with this post was to vent that I left practically an identical comment to a "helpful" one, but it wasn't marked, which is just plain silly. *shrug*

I almost always find the comments useful, unless of course they are downright rude and abusive. You don't even have to agree with a comment to find it useful; when you get a comment you don't agree with you need to step aside and try and look at it from their perspective; this is part of the learning process.
