Explosions at an oil refinery neat Luton, possible casualties, blast felt up to 40 miles away, early reports of a plane being involved but this is denied by police.

We're in north London (well within the "40 miles") and didn't notice a thing - and I've found that I tend to wake up when I hear explosions! Mind you we're wrapped in fog here so that might have deadened the noise.

It's certainly being played as nothing more sinister than an accident at the moment.

Phones and therefore internet have a good chance of being out in the area so I wouldn't be too worried

My parents-in-law are in Luton and are fine; the depot is actually in Hemel Hempstead, quite a bit south of Luton. Even people in Hemel have only lost some windows, so I'm sure your friend in Luton will be fine.

I just saw it on the news. No cause at this point? They seem to have ruled out terrorism, atleast for the moment.
