Help I have read so much here on dodge and burn but I can't figure it out in PSP 7.0 the tutorial says to set my burn brush, but where is the burn brush and what is it? I really am still learing psp. Can anyone give me a tutorial on how to do this that tells me where everything is?

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but in PSP 7 there's a tool called the "retouch brush", the icon looks like a white hand pointing down. In my PSP it's on the left side vertical tool bar. Click on that tool to select it, and then you can choose either burn or dodge from the "tool options" (the tool options icon is in the top options bar, and looks like a rectangle with a blue line across the top and an up/down arrow to the right). You can then set the shape of your brush, the size, hardness, density, all that stuff.

For a whole picture you can also use dodge and burn in layers, where you create a new layer (either a regular, duplicate layer or an adjustment layer) and merge it using dodge or burn mode, and set the percentage.

Now, remember than none of these are allowable edits in a regular challenge, although you can use them in the current "Nude" challenge.

I hope this gets you started at least. Here are a couple online resources:

I pulled down the white hand and found a few options but didn't see dodge or burn there but I am sure with everything you have given me here I might be able to find it with a little reading and playing.

Thank you very much.

After you pull down the white hand you need to click on "tool options" (icon in bar across the top, looks like a rectangle with a blue stripe on top). The tool options popup has a drop down box at the bottom where you can pick the kind of tool you wish to use (the kind of retouch). It starts with "Lighten RGB" and goes to "Color to Target". Dodge and Burn are towards the middle. You can play around with the Size (0-255), and Hardness, Opacity, Density and Step (0-100%) values. For instance, hardness set to 100% will give you a shape that's solid, whereas set to a lower value it will give you a feathered shape, the lower the value the more feathered. Does that make sense?

Have fun - PSP has a lot to offer, compares quite well to PS, and I find it "friendlier" than PS. PSP8 has aspect ratios and a bunch of nice additions to 7.

the burn and dodge tool can be found in the tools bar. it is the icon on top of the 'T' (for text).
the dodge looks like a black lollipop. and the burn looks like a hand.

the burn brush adds contrast/darkens an area and the dodge lightens. don't know if you've ever developed b/w photos in a lab yourself, but burn implies letting an area of a pic get more light, therefore more exposure. dodge is, of course, the opposite, where you block an area with something to prevent it from getting too exposed.

in photoshop, you can play around with the setting to get the results you like.

hope this helps. :o)

Sis why didn't you just call me and ask? LOL although it was Ursula who told me how to do it last month...I couldn't find it either but that was cause my PSP needed reloaded. When you have the tool options opened up click the bottom arrow on the right side and it should give you more options.
