If you're looking for something in that range, I HIGHLY suggest this lens

Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di

The lens is less expensive, but reviews rate it right there with the Nikkor.

I have the Nikkor 24-85 f/2.8-4 and use it often. It is the lens most used when only ONE can go. It has a unique benifit that it exactly mirrors the focal range of my SB600 speedlight, meaning that the range of both this lens and the SB600 is 24-85. This is a perk as the zooms mate with each other automatically. As I adjust the zoom on the Nikkor the speedlight automatically set the focal range to match. As each is 24-85, then I am never over or under with my "flash" range.

The Nikkor 24-85 is a bit soft wide open but is quite capable at f/5.6.
