This was my free study entry. I didn't get many comments, but the ones I got were good. I would like to hear a little more of what is not good about this shot. It didn't get a terrible score, but obviously didn't have that "something" to bring it up out of the 5's.
Was it technical? Subject? Composition? Title? Combination?
On another level, if this was YOUR baby would you think it a good shot for framing etc? Trying to discern if part of the problem was no connection to the subject and not enough emotional impact or photographic impact to overcome that. I'd like to learn from this shot if can. Thanks.
EDITED TO ADD: By the way..this is not my baby, although I know the parents. I think he's a cutie, but I am not so attached that I will be offended by constructive criticism. :)

I gave my feedback on the photo. It's very endearing.
Edit: I tried something on the shot. I'm a sucker for the Gaussian blur.

I gave you an 8 because I am a sucker for beautiful babies. The composition was very lovely and I think if this had a softer warmer feel it would be a sure 10 from me.

Would this be an improvement?
Added slight diffuse glow and warmed the tone. Also cropped in a bit closer to reduce blanket a little.

I'd say that's a lot better. It gives a bit more of that warm fuzzy feeling inside. |

Hi I looked at your photo and can tell you my first impression. Firstly, I think it is a good photo and will mean a lot to the mother. You got in nice and close and the hand is great to show size. What I think could have made the picture better is this: The black background is a bit harsh. It contrasts too much IMHO with the softness of the baby. Some areas of blanket are blown out and they detract a little from the baby. I think just one simple single colored blanket wrapped tightly around the baby might have been better. I like the version by jpochard. It's funny cos you just know that the hand is the hand of the mother the way that she is holding the baby's hand. I think that is what I like best about the photo. |

hehe...actually, it's NOT the hand of the mother. It's my hand. I was holding the baby in a chair at the hospital (baby is about 3hrs old here) while the nurses and hubby were attending to the mom for several minutes. The background was merely the floor area around her hospital bed, so I darkened it out. The blanket was what he was wrapped in by the hospital. However...I'm glad you thought it was the hand of the baby's mom because I think it gives more impact to the photo if that is what comes across as implied.
Also...I am jpochard..same as original poster. That's just an edit I did after reading some of the comments.
Thanks for your comments! :)

That's funny about the hand. Wish I'd had such good pictures of mine when they were only a few hours old.
