I was just re-reading the basic edit rules, and it said absolutely no burning/dodging. I don't like the background in my Cheese picture, so I was just going to burn it out. Is there anything I can do that isn't against the rules?

A selective color adjustment layer may work if it's a specific color.

Darken it if you can with Level/Curves or Shadows/Mids, but be careful. If there is anything that can be thought as a major element and you darken it out of the pic in a basic challenge, someone will come after you for removal of a major element which is not to be confused with the subject. Seen DQs and DQ requests too many times on that one (in basic challenges).

You might be able to darken it with curves or levels, but you can't select just the background. The adjustment must be applied to the entire image. Note that you probably wouldn't be able to "burn out" the background in Advanced editing either. Completely removing a background with any significant detail would lead to a DQ for removing major elements.

Is there anyway to just darken the background? Keep in mind that Photoshop don't come natural to me. I mostly use it for cropping and minor color adjustments.

IF the background is a color distinctly different from the colors in your main subject, you can lighten/darken/hue-shift it in photoshop's hue/saturation dialogue quite effectively.

If it is much brighter than the rest of the picture, you can effectively darken it with either levels or, sometimes, selective color in the white range, but you run the risk of DQ for eliminating major elements (or introducing them).

Otherwise you're pretty much out of luck. The goal in basic is to light and expose the scene in such a way as to not require any of these shenanigans, in theory :-)

not without selcting it which is against basic rules.
it is probably easier just to reshoot the photo, or if you can't learn from your mistake and be more conscience of the bg next time.

Just a thought... perhaps a tighter crop to squeeze the background out of your photo.

I did a tighter crop, and people who saw it didn't like it. What about a Gaucassion (sp?) blur?

you'd have to apply the Gaussian blur to the whole image which I have a feeling isn't what you'd want to do.

sorry, I'm in a mood this eveing. Using Gaussian Blur will blur your subject also. Is there any way you can re-shoot, BTW?

You can't select just the background in Basic editing. If you apply a blur, you'll be blurring the entire image.

I might try to re-shoot. I'll have to talk the person who helped me the first go 'round into letting me try again. The *model* was a difficult subject.

Gets kinda goofy around here sometimes :-) But, it's all in good fun. Since entries are supposed to be anonymous,

it's considered against site etiquette to discuss details of your entry that would give away what it is. But, simple anonymous questions about it are fine.

BTW, I'm not going for grinding in the nude this time... lol

Pretty easy assumption... it made a LOT of people mad ... but I think that's what megatherian was alluding to.
