I have seen many photographs where the photograph is B&W except for a coloured object. i.e a rose or a hat.
How is this achieved |

There are several ways to accomplish this.
One method would be to duplicate the base layer and convert the duplicate to b/w, then either mask or delete (allowing the background layer to show through) the part you want to be in color.
Another option would be to make a selection of the area you want to remain in color, invert the selection, then use a hue/sat/brightness tool/layer to desaturate the selection.
Neither of these is allowable in a challenge under the basic rules.

I am sure you can find some good tutorials with examples for whatever editing application you use through google.
