'Its not the camera its the photographer'. You have all heard that statement, well it happens to be true.

I have images taken with the Canon S50 which have been accepted into National and Regional exhibitions. They took a little more work and than the ones I take with the 10D but it can be done.

I don't think that making the dSLR owners step down to P&S cameras is going to level any playing field because thats not where the inconsistency lies.

But if it would make everyone happy once in a while I would be willing to use the S50 for a challenge.

That, plus I would wager the analysis that leads to the exposure decision the camera makes in auto mode is probably a bit more advanced or "smarter", if you will, in the majority of SLRs.

That's why I suggested a really cheap camera challenge. A toy camera or camera phone would definitely level the playing field.

But it won't. Those who consistently place well in the challenges do so because they know how to use the equipment they have -- having a better camera doesn't automatically make a person a better photographer.

Knowing what the camera is doing, and how to use that to accomplish the task is the only way to make good photographs. Those that do would take the toy camera, fire off a few shots, learn the limitations and capabilities of the thing and then perform the 'pre-processing' required to get the shot. Pre-processing, the little things like using a grey card to make sure the exposure is right (or some other card to adjust for camera limitation), controlling the lighting to minute details.

It would be a fun challenge, change the focus from during and after the shutter click to before the camera is even picked up -- but, I bet those that score consistently high do all that already. It would certainly not level the playing field.

In my opinion, the playing field doesn't need leveled -- it needs more plateaus. Places, those learning can say they have reached a milestone and are not capable of competing on a (perhaps slightly) higher level. The last thing those just starting out need are the experts showing them how little they know by saying they are competing on the same 'level'.

Yes, and if you look at the top 10 finishers in that challenge, all were among the best (in a broad sense) photographers on the site, I'm pretty sure all have won ribbons either before or since. So the arguement that this would "level the playing field" or help newer members not be intimidated or get a chance doesn't stand up well.

On the other side, as has been mentioned, there are tons of examples of shots enter that were shot with very basic P&S cameras that have done very well. Konodor's Swingin' comes to mind, or any of BobsterLobster's early shots with his Pentax Optio - he should have gotten an endorsement gig with Pentax. And those are just two examples from probably hundreds that could be listed.
