Since I drive a lot on the weekend and spend time in traffic and on highways when I hear of an Amber Alert I try to get as much info as possible to hopefully help out that child and family.

I just found out that Cingular celluar (along with other companys... ALLTEL Mobile, Dobson Communications, First Cellular of Southern Illinois, Nextel Communications, RCC/Unicel, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless and Western Wireless) and the Amber Alert people have come together to be able to send you text messages for zip codes you input to your cell phone.

I went to //www.cingular.com/AMBERalerts for cingular but you can probably go straight to wireless amber alers and register. I got a confirming text message right away and cingular does not charge you for the text messages from amber alerts.

Just wanted to pass this on so that maybe others can help too.

That is a really neat idea, and something that would be likely to help a lot of abducted children. Thanks for the info!

Good idea sharing this. I heard about this nearly a yr ago, immediately signed up for it (free text message). Luckily it was this summer before I got my first alert. But how impressed I was when it came up. Shortly thereafter the person was spotted. You then get a second message telling you its cancelled. I think it is a brilliant way to get the message out. Your sharing of the information has reminded me to remind others again!
