| Since the GIMP vs. PS Elements thread seemed to imply that GIMP is definately better than Elements, what do you all think of GIMP vs. Photoshop? My boyfriend has been on this linux kick and keeps saying it's so great and they have software equivalent to everything I use, but I'm still skeptical of his insistance that GIMP is just as good as Photoshop. I've been using photoshop for years and have a hard time imagining anything else being as powerful...any one want to shed some light on the merits of GIMP? |

i dont think gimp is as powerful when it comes to layers. especially adjustment layers.

Hands down Photoshop is more powerful and faster than the Gimp. It offers more built in functions, things you can do in GIMP but manually. Right now, more third party plugins are also available for Photoshop than for GIMP.
GIMP has no adjustment layers, a big advantage with Photoshop when you are experimental post-processing. GIMP's dodge/burn tools SUCK!
While I suggest GIMP to everyone, as I actually like the porgram and use it along with Photoshop, if you have Photoshop, keep it. If you need a graphics program and don't have the money or don't want to shell it out, go GIMP. Still, even if you have Photoshop, there is nothing wrong with downloading the GIMP and experimenting with it.
