I sell on ebay from time to time, and I recently had 6 smoke alarms I needed to get rid of. So I put them on a multiple quantity auction and listed the quantity as 6. One guy bid on 5 of them, another guy bid on 1 of them. After the auction was over, I received payment from both of them, but on the payment from the guy who only won one of them, he paid twice as much as he was supposed to, and included a note saying he saw on the auction that I had more than 1 to offer, and he wanted 2 instead of one. I immidiately refunded half of his money and included a note saying that I only had 6 of them available and had sold the other 5 to another gentleman who had bid on the auction. As much as I try to explain what happens, he just doesn't get it. I shipped out his smoke alarm within 24 hours of the auction ending. I'm about to get a big negative feedback from this guy, and if I do I'm going to snap on him. For anyone interested in following the drama, I'll update until I get a neg. The bad part is that this guy has been an ebay member since 1999, with 98% positive feedback over 150. The other guy that bought the 5 from me was a new member, no feedback, paid immidiately, and had no problems. Here is a transcript of our conversations thus far:

Casey,
I need two of these, and your auction indicated you had at least two. You refunded my payment for the second. Please hold shipment and advise. Thanks.
Mark

Mark,
I sent you a note after receiving payment as to why I was issuing the refund, but it must not have went through. I did have more than two of them, 6 to be exact. However, I listed all 6 of them on the auction you bid on. To order more than one, you would have needed to bid on more than one of them before the auction ended. You only bid on one alarm, while another bidder bid on the other 5. When the auction ended, there was 1 bid from you, and 5 from another person. This is why I had to issue a refund for the extra one. I have the other one ready to ship out today. I apologize if this has been any trouble.
Thanks,
Casey Wigginton

Casey,
Your auction item showed one item, but then showed a reduced shipping for additional items. There was no mention of HOW MANY WOULD YOU LIKE? You can keep the last one!
Unhappy,
Mark

Mark,
What can we do to resolve this? I've already sent you the smoke alarm (as stated in the auction, fast 24-48 hours shipping). When you looked at the auction, it no longer showed quantity: 6, because someone had already bought 5 of them so it was down to quantity: 1. In the shipping instructions I included a discount for anyone who purchased more than one from that auction. I wasn't attempting to advertise that I had more of them I would sell outside of the ebay auction, if you would just send me money for them. To do so would have been a violation of ebay policy. It's just a case of miscommunication where my auction description wasn't as clear as it should have been. Otherwise, there would have been no misunderstanding. I didn't intentionally try to deceive you or anyone else, and would be happy to resolve this. I don't know what else I can do since I have refunded the extra money and shipped your smoke detector already. Let me know how I can help.
Thanks,
Casey Wigginton

Casey,
Since I had the winning bid, it would seem to me that I should have first choice on how many to purchase. You sold more to someone else, perhaps the second highest bidder. That is not the way an auction operates! The way to correct the situation would be to have the second buyer ship one more to me and I'll resend the original money to you. If not you can be certain I'll inform ebay what has happened and they will take similar steps to correct this.
Regards,
Mark

Mark,
That is not how a multiple quantity auction works. When I listed the auction, I set the quantity to 6 because that's how many I had. You were not the only high bidder. There were 6 high bidders in the auction.
You were the first person to bid on the auction. When you set your bid, you only bid one time, for one alarm. The time of your bid was Dec-02-05 12:48:30. On Dec-03-05 10:33:59 another person placed a bid on the same auction as you. They bid on all 5 of the remaining alarms.
The other buyer rightfully purchased five of them by placing a bid for 5, just as you rightfully purchased one by placeing a bid for only one. It would not be fair for me to ask him to return the item. You can read the specifics on how these types of auctions work here:
//pages.ebay.com/help/buy/buyer-multiple.html Please get back with me if you have any more questions. I would still like to resolve this issue.
Thanks,
Casey Wigginton

wow.. looks like somebody doesn't quite understand the multiple auction listing... :(
hope it turns out allright.
maybe you should send him a link to how dutch auctions work (they are called dutch auctions right?)

you are doing a wonderful job of explaining it to him. perhaps you need to get more simple, as he seems to be simple.

I say let him contact ebay. Then, if they try to "correct it, show them teh correspondance with him.

Dang, it made sense to me, and if it made sense to me, it should make sense to most of the population . . .

I don't think there's going to be any way for me to please this person through explanation. The only way to do it would be for me to go to the store and buy a smoke alarm to send to him, and I'm not going to do that. Ebay won't do anything to correct the situation if he did decide to report it. However, he will most likely leave me negative feedback, which almost makes it worth it to go buy a smoke detector for him. It won't be the first time I've gotten a negative needlessly, and probably won't be the last. I'll update this thread until the drama is over.
