Im not sure whether to go for a sigma 28-200 lens or a tamron 28-200 lens for my eos 350d, which will give me the better results? Im unsure as to whether either brand is better, etc. What do the pro's think?

save for a canon lens=) in all reality i think either of those lenses would perform similarly but don't take my word for it.
There are some good lenses ( i hear) by 3rd party makes, like the tamrom 28-75 2.8... but with a 28-200 you're not gonna get the greatest quality no matter what the brand really. |

If it's in your range, go for the Sigma 18-200 instead of those. I have the Sigma 18-125 and it's great. Sammie and others on the site say the 18-200 is as good.

The 28-200 range was designed for film cameras, and while they will work fine on your 350, the 28mm end is not very wide angle considering the 1.6x 'crop' factor.
The 18-200 range lenses are the digital camera 'replacements' for those lenses. The 18mm wide end is reasonable, and these are coatged for imrpoved performance on digital cameras.
Generally the more zoom you get the more compromises have to be made. These are 10x zooms. If the zoom is more than 3x or 4x something has to give to get more zoom - usually distortions or some kind at the extreme ends of the zoom (strait walls are not strait for example). Images will not be as sharp as well. At 200mm these are f6.3 lenses - very slow.
If you want the best image possible, you will need multiple lenses. If you want the simplicity and convenience of carrying only one lens then you have already prioritized what is important to you.

I've seen some japanese comparison of the Sigma and Tamron 18-200, the Sigma seemed sharper. I'd stay away from the 28-300 zooms as you don't get any wide angle coverage with this range. |
