Well, my entry is in. Although I set my hair on fire just a "tad" bit during the process. *tee hee* Maybe I should have entered that one?

I am finding this one to be very challenging....I shot the concept I had for this one last night and it is not exactly what I envisioned with what turned out. Trouble is that the amount of light (lumuns) drops off sharply a foot or two away from the subject. Even with the use of 7 candles (6 off camera) it did not quite work the way I wanted it to. Hmmmm, tis time to go to plan 2 or do a reshoot.
Anyone else experiencing some difficulities with this challenge? |

I found exactly the same. I tried one or two trial shots and wasn't happy with the result.

Unfortunately, no. I mean, I'm a camera freak and all, but I needed my hands to put out my hair! :)

I took about 125 shots for my entry, all with different backgrounds and for one particular concept that I wouldn't let go of. However, during the process another concept came up and so I am using that one, but it was DEFINATELY a challenge to do candlelight, I agree.

O.K. I have a bigggggggggg question on the Candlelight challenge now.
It says to use candlelight for the photo. Is that exclusive? Can it be set-up like a night shot with the candle providing the majority of the light BUT while the shutter is open can you use the "paint with light method" to just illuminate one, ONE, small object in said setting?
It is very hard to get proper illumination on my model and (specifically)on the held object since main candle is 1 1/2 feet away from main subject. Simple answer is to move the candle closer but that is not an option because it needs to remain in that positioned spot and because of safety reasons (no fires - trying to avoid setting off the smoke alarm and causing harm)
SC - anyone??? |

I would think anything goes as long as candle/candlelight is shown in the photo. At least that is the premise I am going on.

Welcome to the world of the Fujifilm Finepix :( Hence why I am upgrading to a rebel next year. BUT, for some help there, try changing your background or possibly going with day light. Sometimes it helps with the fuji.

I think this challenge will end up excluding a lot of people with cameras that don't perform well in low light - especially if candle light is the only form of light allowed. |

It dependes on the camera capacities. For instance, if your camera can deliver low noise at high ISO, or if you can make long exposures with it, if there is a setting for candlelight, etc.
Try to get the highest usable ISO, maximum aperture (lowest F value), and shutter speed to get the best exposure you can achieve.

settin on a tripod...
Seriously though you are going to want to experiment with longer shutter speeds... and possibly a higher ISO. And yes use a tripod, beanbag or something to keep it still. If you have Timer Mode on the camera I might use that as well. |

Well, I think Santa has a new camera under the tree already. Probably not a DSLR, but anything is an improvement. The Finepix has served as a great learning tool, but I'm ready to upgrade for sure. hee hee |

I am probably tipping off what I am trying to do in my shot but if you are can't come up with an idea you like, look to the masters, in this case the painterGeorge de la Tours an amazing eye for the uses of candelinght. Next challenge, getting an oil painting effect on the sensor. |

Thanks graphicfunk & rgarciah55 for the feedback. Well I tried doing a reshoot of my idea yesterday and it was a little better but it isn't up to my quality standards. Shame it was a great composition.
So I fell upon idea number 2 - which was an O.K. idea and the results turned out waaaaayyyyy better than expected. So it will be idea number 2 for the challenge. Once the contest is over I will inquire others for help in how to get the first idea to where I want it to be.....it is too good of an idea to abandon. |

Alright, I am new to the website, and have only entered in one challenge so far.. but i am looking for some feeback on one part of my idea. As I am underage lol i don't have a lot of background with wine. But I want my picture to look authentic...so my question is with wine what would be more of a dessert wine, and would that be in a regular wine glass? I know it doesn't have much to do with photography but i was hoping someone could help me out. |

Yes, that is EXACTLY how I feel about it. I think yours is actually better than my fuji, but nonetheless, I have won a 2nd and 3rd place in other contest sites with it. BUT, now it has three dead pixels, and in low light it sucks, and the zoom isn't adequate for my style of shooting, etc. Just a multitude of problems.
I tend to have to be a bit more "creative", shall I say, in some contests like candlelight rather than doing the normal 1.5 minute shutter speed delays with starlight effects that some do in these type of contests. I just don't have that capacity to set shutter speeds. Hell, I don't even know what my shutter speed is until I see my exif data. It is all in the mind of the camera. LOL....BUT, YES, a Canon EOS Rebel XT for this gal next year. THEN I will really be on the road to actual photography!!
I hope your present is a nice one!! :)

A dessert wine is usually a sweet wine, or even champagne. Sometimes a woody type flavor is nice, depending on the dessert. Champagne is good with fruit, and a sweet wine is usually good with pastries. You can ask whoever is getting it for you to ask for a wine to the attendant that goes with the dessert you are having. Champagne glasses are usually long and fluted. Wine glasses can depend on the wine. Usually fluted, but more bulbish looking. Some are a bit higher and some shorter and stocky, depending on again, the wine. The more aroma to the wine, usually the more short and fat it is. If you are under age, you will want to go with an adult and have them ask questions to the attendant to get the right equipment.
If you PM me and tell me exactly what you want (unless it is for a challenge and needs to be anon), I can be more specific as to what you need.

Dessert wine is usually very sweet and comes in a smaller bottle than regular wine (as you can't drink as much of it!) - It is generally served in a smaller glass as well. Think something along the lines of port or sweet sherry (say a 2oz measure) |
