Looks like sensor dust. Nice photo, by the way.

sensor dust for sure. And what's that flare? Looks very odd to me. Nice capture though :-)

What lens are you using to take this? I do not believe that this is sensor dust. I have a lens that no mater how clean I get it on the outside I get the same results, leaving me to believe that it is a defect in the lens. Oh, it does not matter if it is on my 20D or my 5D so that rules out sensor issues.

If you find out something else let me know I hope that it is not in the lens.

i shot it with my 35-350 l

The flare is just that...flare. It was bright sunshine and the streak is a flare. I was in a hurry to get these pics online after our vacation so I just opened it in photoshop and did autolevels. It produced the photo you see. What do you all use to clean your lens?

Man, I hope that this is not a problem with the lens...
My problem is with my Canon 100 - 400 L IS.
The good news is that it only shows up with photos of sky's.

I use a Giottos Optical Cleaning Kit with Rocket Air Blaster, Brush & Liquid to clean my lenses.

i have seen this several times on this lens..when shooting towards the sky....or with strong sun.

The spots are definitely sensor dust. Shoot at a larger aperture (less than f/8) and you won't see them. I use the Copperhill cleaning system.

yikes. remember to change lenses away from wind, camera facing down, and turned off to minimize dust settling on the sensor after you clean it.

I have not cleaned my sensor yet....how often do you guys have to do it? I do try to keep it down and try to hurry when changing lenses.

i've had my rebel for a little over a year, never swabbed the sensor but i have used a blower to remove a few pieces of dust and some that were stuck to the mirror.

Cleaning frequency will vary greatly with the amount of use and the shooting environment; amount of lens changes will have an effect as well. Even the model of camera makes a difference, there are several reasons why this is so. With a 20D in "normal usage" expect to need to clean 2-4 times a year. The copperhill method, as previously recommended by scalvert, is also what I use. It is highly effective, fast, and relatively inexpensive. Once you have cleaned a couple times and develop a feel for doing it, it will become just like cleaning a lens, an occasionally necessary, painless process.

Great news:

Lens - Good
Sensor - Bad

Did some test today and found out what you guys already knew - sensor was dirty. I would not have believed it since my 5D is only a couple weeks old. This is why we come to DPC to learn from others and you guys are the best.... Thanks for your knowledge.

A side note anyone interested in getting a 5D or any full 35mm DLSR you need to remember that the sensor is so much larger then other DLSR's like the 20D that it is easier to get dust on it is you are not very careful.
