does anyone remember the name of the guy who used to hide a camera in his jacket and take pictures in the subway ('cause that's when he could photograph people as they really were)? |

I think you are probably referring to Luc Delahaye. He was a Magnum photographer.
Some of the pictures from his "L'autres" series can be found here, while a general biography of his life can be found here.
It might be worth noting that many photographers have utilised this technique.

if you like candid and street photography, check out these galleries in here.
i used a really long zoom lens so that people weren't even aware of my existence. i enjoy this type of photography very much - captures true expressions.
