general rule of thumb is go get a canon lens for canon camera, or nikon lens for nikon camera, etc.
it often costs more but its better, though the other lenses will do the job. you just need to decide just how picky about quality you are. |

i think you ment to say "it costs more, but it's often better..."
sometimes, paying twice the price for very similar quality just does not make sense (or dollars and cents, as the case may have it)...

A lot of people on this site use the Sigma 105 and a few the Tamron 90.
Check out Jacko's portfolio. I believe he uses the Sigma 105.

Generalities with lenses don't usually get you very far. The Tamron SP series lenses are up there with the L series from Canon, but some of their others are, well, lacking.

Some Canon lenses are no match for offerings from 3rd party suppliers like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina etc.
Just because a lens is made by the manufacturer of the camera is no indication of quality.

The canon 100mm F2.8 USM Macro is an amzing lens. If you ask me, it's a bargain at $450.
Very sharp, very fast auto focus, and a very shallow DOF when you want it.
I have not used the others.

Photo.net has an excellent comparison between the Tamron and the Canon macros. I'd recommend you check that out.
Popular Photography tested a new Tokina 100mm macro on their Nov. issue and states excellent sharpness from f2.8 on and wonder if paying more for Canon/Tamron/Nikon is worth it. I'm thinking about getting that when I get a macro lens. |

I have found that after haveing a Canon 24-70L that I dont use my 100 macro much. Only when I need the 1:1 magnification. At $450 its a bargain.
