I was wondering how to set up a little studio here at home without the lighting? I don't have the money to buy lighting right now but I really need to get my daughters pictures done to send out in cards by next week. A friend of hubby's was going to loan me all of his stuff but now he's got 3 more engagements this next week and won't be able to.

Any tips and ideas on how to do it?

If you don't have studio-type lighting, I would suggest planning your temp space around a window that gets good daylight (not direct sunlight). Everything else works from there, move furniture, etc. as needed for space you need and shoot like mad! :)

Don't think I would worry about hanging a backdrop, use the christmas tree or a nice piece of art on a distant wall .

Just a comment on the above post... North facing windows work best as the light is more diffused ... well, that is in the Northern Hemisphere anyway :-)

I agree with the no backdrop, a christmas tree or other Christmas items woudld work fine. But, if you need a backdrop try a large festive color sheet. Just make sure the edges of the sheet are well outside the crop of the photo.

And make sure the sheet is ironed!

Here's a snapshot I took using just the light from a North-facing window, no flash.

If I could do it again, I'd probably use a reflector on the right, just to increase the light and fill in shadows.

I've put other comments in the shot.

Thank you all for the help. We don't have a tree this year since we won't be home for CHristmas, but I do have garland up around the windows. Will have to see what I can come up with to spruce things up a bit. I'll post when I'm done!

Thanks again!
