I want to make some studio props similar to some of these Off The Wall Products. Anyone have a clue where to begin?

BTW, Their web site bites and their prices are astounding!

$1,300?! I would buy myself a 100-400mm L IS first! :-)

You're right, their site sucks. You'd think with their prices they'd have enough left over to pay a good webmaster!

Sorry..no suggestions, but good luck! :-)

Depends on your construction skills, but go look around at Lowe's or Home Depot and see if you get any ideas. Also, print a pic of props you'd like to build, the associates at these stores are usually very knowlegable in thier fields and probably can help you brainstorm.

suggestion one - find you a kid that plays warhammer. If anyone knows how to make stuff out of styrofoam, it is a kid who plays warhammer.

seggustion two - go to your local community college and offer to volunteer some free time to the stage manager. You learn more about set design and prop making than you ever want to know.

Anyways, most of that stuff isn't "real". It is styrofoam, partical board, cheap build materials thathave been airbrushed. Even the "wrought iron" on the bench isn't actual iron. There are tricks to faking it, you just have to find the right person to teach you.

Great ideas, guys. Eli, love the set designer idea. I've painted for years so I think I could pull off the styrofoam things with a bit of know-how.

*goes to google set design sites*

Set design for stage=set design for photography I would think...though perhaps on a smaller scale. When I was doing theater stuff we found these huge sheets (drywall size) of foamcore that we used a lot for our sets. Much lighter than would but still good and thick.

A lot of the things on their site look like they're foamcore type props and it looks like a lot are just different canvas backgrounds that get dropped down too.

If you don't have a college theater nearby, consider getting involved in a community theater for one of their shows. They're always looking for help with set design...or a high school even.
