Purple fringing or Chromatic Abberation (CA) is due to optical design of the lens itself.
CA can be reduced in a number of ways though.
One, you can stop down on the aperature, for example most lenses will have a higher chance of CA when wide open and most respond somewhat as you stop down on the aperature.
Two, you can do it in post processing.
Three, you can avoid it by not shooting high contrast shots (not very practical).

More expensive lenses and lenses made for digital cameras have specific coating/lens material to prevent this from occuring.
