My husband is the champion of unsharp mask but basically it allows you to customize the exact sharpness of an image. The "sharpen" option in PS has the program selecting the sharpness for you. Sometimes this works out ok, sometimes not.

Here is a nice tutorial that tells you about USM

The basic idea is that it looks for areas of color which arre different, and then lightens the lighter pixels a bit and darkens the darker pixels, which creates higher contrast right at the boundary, making it easier to see the detail in the image.

The "amount" is a vague setting controlling "how powerfully" the filter is applied.

The "diameter" determines how far to either side of the color boundary the effect extends.

The "threshold" determines "how different" the colors have to be before the effect is applied. You want a higher number when you have smooth gradations of tone (as in portraits) so that you don't get a banding effect.

See examples of sharpening (and over-sharpening) here.

Here is another link that goes pretty deep on what (perceived) sharpness is. Someone (forget who, sorry) posted this link a couple of weeks ago. It discusses USM as well as several other sharpening tools/methods.
