Comments on my COUNTRY LIFE photo include
'Looks a little hazy',
'a little dark all over ',
'Could use a little constrast to help the colors pop out better'...

The colours look both realistic and bright (but not too bright) to me. Is my monitor that different from other people's? (Viewsonic G773) I have contrast at 75% and brightness at 66%. Is that the problem?

What say the rest of you?

I had the same problem. I get too dark on a lot of my entries. I ended up adjusting my monitor darker so I would end up making it lighter. Seems to have worked to I stopped getting the too dark comments.

Geez the person who told you it looked hazy gave you a 7! I could see if they gave you a low score but come on. You're mystified by a 7?

Yup, a bit hazy on my monitor too.

There is also a slight haze that I can see on my monitor but nothing that I would've complained about or made a point of. It's barely noticable.

There isn't any haze visible at all on my work monitor.

It looks fine on my LCD monitor, not dark or hazy.

To me there`s no haze and colour and contrast are good. I gave 7. Overall i think final score was fair.

Not much haze, and it is not too dark. I wonder if some of those people ever noticed the calibration bar under the photo's

LOL, I don't see any haze at all. The pic looks well lit to me. The darker areas of the background are, well, a little dark, but that's normal because they are shadows. Everything else looks perfect (as far as lighting goes).

Don't see any haze, maybe it's just a cheap monitor. I have a Sony.

Thanks for your comments. So far 5 say no haze and 2 say hazy and 1 says 'not much haze'. So I guess it's 5 to 3.

Okay, I don't see haze, per se, but perhaps your brightest areas are causing the *illusion* of haze? When I look at the photo, those bright areas really burn, and maybe just a tad enough that they *cloud* some of the details around them? Hmmm....

Also, there is just an ever so slight motion blur, which makes the horse look just a tad *hazy.* Perhaps these two combined are the culprit. I like the shot, though. Keep up the good work.

Nope, not a cheap monitor, brand new and calibrated. Good, well contrasted photo's don't look like they have haze on my monitor, this one does. I have fixed it in photoshop to look less hazy on my monitor, if anything, this shows how different monitors can be. I had a photo that some people could see rainbow banding on that I and many others could not.
I'll send you the version that looks better to me.

I can see how people thought hazy. I think its just not exactly the right word to describe it. I might say hazy, only for lack of a better term. I do however think you need to push the contrast a little and increase the saturations on the greens and possibly the brightness too. The grass looks more brown that green (i am colorblind, so take that with a grain of salt).

I think this is one of those tough-to-expose-correctly photos. In my opinion you have done as good a job as I could do. I have one of those in the speed challenge right now. I exposed it to my subject and it blew out my background. This one I think the horse is exposed correctly, but with the vast difference in light/dark with respect to the subject and background, the background loses its integrity. If you would've exposed to the background, the horse would be glowing from overexposure.

Take it as a lesson in choosing subjects and backgrounds for your composition. That's what I'm doing with mine. Then move on to the next challenge. I don't think the photo is hazy, but the colors are very muted and it makes them look flat and muddy.

No haze what so ever! The background looks just a little too dark on my LCD, but nothing I would have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it. I ALWAYS get "hazy" comments. Particularly on this shot, that I, by the way, love very much and got low scores for in the "country" challenge. I got some "out of focus" and "background too harsh/bright" comments. But it looks perfectly in focus to me, and the background is not bright at all! Is this my monitor?

Your replies show that not only do people have their monitors set up differently but their eyesights & colour preferences also vary. That's understandable. I've gained some insight on the differences you are seeing which will (I hope) help me in future shots.

Thanks for your input!
