I hear people always say, "Shoot in RAW format and then set the white balance in Photoshop." That's great...but how do you do that?

Only with PSCS or PSCS2. If you have PS7 it won't do it unless you have a plug-in.

Your 20D (all EOSs and the Rebel XT) comes with Canon Digital Photo Professional for working with RAW files. Easiest way I've seen to set the WB. Has several presets but the "Click" button under White Balance Adjustment gives you a eye dropper that you can click on an area in your photo that should be white... Hasn't failed me yet.

Check your version and upgrade to 1.6.1.0 if that didn't ship with your cam.

2.0.3.7 is out now.

And note that some whites are really blue--for example, some detergents have "blueing" added to make whites look "whiter". Some white paper has blue added for the same reason.

I've found that the best way to set WB is either the coffee filter trick, or to use a card with white, 18% grey and black. Use the grey to set the WB, then set the black to the black, and white to the white, and set the grey to the middle, then repeat until its stable using the three sliders on the bottom of the histogram. I use a target from //www.photovisionvideo.com for this (its pricey, but they give you a DVD course on how to use it that's worth the money.)

Thanx for the heads-up on the update. Looks like they added sharpening and dust removal...very cool.
