I work at a private school in Anaheim, CA. There is a big party, this Saturday (for the founder), and they wanted me to take the pictures. I semi-reluctantly agreed to do it...I've never done studio work before.

They're paying for all of the rental equipment (lights, lens(es), etc.)...I already have a camera. We're going to have a two umbrella light setup with some sort of backlight. I wanted to rent a really good Canon lens for the portraits. There could be anywhere from 1 to 15 people in some of these shots. What kind of lens would work for such a big range? I realize that this will not work out perfectly...I don't have the experience and the two light setup won't be enough
light...but putting that aside, I need to rent a quality lens that will accomodate as many people as possible. Do they make wide-angle telephoto lenses???? I guess that's an oxymoron. I would like a little background blur, but I also might need to accomodate a lot of people.

Also, with strobe lights (umbrellas), how do you know what the picture will look like before you take the picture? With continuous lighting, it's obvious what the picture will probably look like, but I'm clueless when it comes to strobes (I need to learn as much as possible before
Saturday night!). The setup will be outside...completely illuminated by the studio lights (don't know if that's good or bad).

Last question...what color temperature should the camera be set to (studio lights...in an outside, night time setting)?

I REALLY appreciate any and all feedback! I realize this is short notice, but I need to get good in two days! Thanks a lot :-)

The 24-70L f2.8 would probably work great for what you're going to be doing. Most of the shots you'll take will probably fall within its range and you get some good shallow DOF if you want it.

Ok, I'll look into that lens. Hopefully the local camera shop rents one! I would appreciate any help regarding the lighting, etc. (mentioned in the opening thread). Thanks!

It's difficult to say what lighting settings would be best. Your best bet is to set up early and take test shots with a willing participant or two.

Shoot in RAW format and it won't matter what white balance setting you use, you'll be able to compensate in Photoshop. If you have a laptop, it would allow you to see the test shots much better.
