Hi people ...
Just wanted to clear my name:/
I got DQ for my last challenge but that was just because I failed to submit the proof in timeâ¦
My computer is broken at the moment (virus) so I have to go to my friend to check out the internet.
Anyway ⦠Did this photo with a speed flash on 15 sec. ( very simple actually)
Now I feel better:)

Too bad, was a pretty cool shot and frankly it didn´t even enter my mind that you intentionally "cheated". Glad your computer is feeling better :D |

The computer is still broken :(
Have to go on the Internet in school or visit some friends :/
Is there any good free software on the internet that I could download?
I want to clean this mess up... âSearch and destroyâ+âNorton Antivirus" is for example not doing the trick...
And even when i format the Hard disk, it just gives me 2 hours on the net and than the hole thing is back.
The problem is that the modem I got ( a lousy dial up box) is not supported by win XP:( Any other suggestions than buying a new modem:/ ?

I am not sure where this placed, but if it was not in the top five then perhaps the only reason it needed proof was that there are several ways of getting the effect you got, not all of which are legal. Had you filled in how you attained the result you did in the photographers comments area, it might never have required proof in the first place. I know that is water over the dam for this shot, but you might keep it in mind for the next technical shot you submit. |

Sorry I didn't read the previous replies.
Could be your motherboard that has an infection, I think u can reset that with a switch that's on the motherboard. But if u want to do this, and u never have done this, I suggest u bring it down a hardware store so they can have a closer look. Perhaps they find something else that's causing this problemo!

BUY A MAC is a bit old now so I will suggest something more helpful. In the days back when I used to run Windows I found that Windows 2000 was the safest, forget XP its very pretty to look at but has too many loops for errors.. as far as your virus goes I think you will be better off to get a new HDD then instal windows 2000 (if you dont have a copy of it Im sure I could give you mine I will NEVER run windows again in my life so I wont need it. The best, at the time, software for viruses that I found was one called F-Prot it is free just google it and then update it.. MBR viruses are rare these days for sure but not impossible to get and the fact that you are formatting the drive and still getting stressed COULD mean an MBR virus so I suggest a new HDD, not used one cos you might have the same prob...
If you have a few bucks around then I would seriously suggest switching to MAC, the virus free enviorment has been a breath of fresh air to me, MAC interface takes a bit of getting used to but I had it nailed after a month or so and the software is only a fraction more expensive, the price of MACS are dropping by the week too so a decent machine wont break the bank.. anyway, good luck with it hope this was helpful.
You might want to try a LOW LEVEL FORMAT using LLF software that i cannot remember the name of sorry.

Go here and follow the directions EXACTLY.
I had lost all data on my computers TWICE from viruses etc. I then found this thread which cured my computer for all time. Additionally, I have tried 6 of the big name anti-virus softwares--- I finally found TRENDMICRO
as a result of using this link. It is absolutely wonderful. Have not had a single issue since.
Hope this helps.

One question on your shot- which was great by the way- how long did it take for the little "flashy" lights to disappear from your vision. I did a multiple flash exposure a long time ago and by the time I got done with the 10 flashes I thought my brain was going to explode.

Can it be that the problem Lays in the modem, because it is not supported by the windows XP (Iâm running) so itâs a lot more open to the whole traffic of spyware and viruses?
I think I am going to buy a new HDD and install the Win 2000.
At least itâs saver than this crap version Iâve got ;)
What about win98 ;) It is probably the safest one because no viruses are programmed for that old version anymore.
Switching to MAC is WAY over my budget at the moment but when I get the change too⦠I will most likely buy me a MAC because we are using those in my school, First time I work with those things but have to say⦠very impressed how itâs developing!
Thanks for helping out! I will try those links as well!
And to answer your question vxpraâ¦
I still got those spots in my eyes;)
This speed flash is incredibly strong, especially when you have it on 1/1 !
Lol. First time I used that on my self (in totally darkness by the way) I thought my eyes where gonna pop out!
I will NEVER let it happen to me again!!! ;)
Hehe. Thatâs why I always try to get a model from now on ;)
What I did... was just closing my eyes until I made the real shot. Then I just pinched my eyes a little in the worst moments;) and had the settings on 1/16! NOT 1/1!!! |

A MAC is nice yes, but remember u have to buy all new software for it,
unless that's no big deal.
Goodluck with your P.C

Are you running up-to-date virus software ALL THE TIME? It sounds like you're just doing a free scan from the website and then hopping back on the internet with no protection. Not advisable. If you're going to be online, you need virus protection, whether you're using a modem or cable. If you don't want to use Norton (although, contrary to previous posts, it does not suck...I've used it for years and had zero problems) then you can pick another but you'll need to pick one. |

Doesn't your ISP know if you have a virus ?
Ours called our home, and told us we had a virus on our network.
(we use broadband, but I think that doesn't matter?) U could give them a call, and perhaps they know it? (just a thought)
:)

download and run Stinger from McAfee, if you got something on the disk it will find it.
You don't need to downgrade to Win2K, it is not all that. XP is fine.
Let me know what you find.

Cool picture, sorry it got disqualified. Happens I guess.
Are you installing a version of XP with no service packs? If so, and if you're disabling the windows firewall for some reason, that's the reason right there. Reinstall it again, enable the firewall, connect to the net, install SP2, install the rest of the updates. It'll be hell on a dial-up connection though... I haven't bothered with updates on mine beyond SP2, for that very reason.
I was troubleshooting some stuff on my laptop once, and had the windows firewall disabled. When I connected to the net, within 5 minutes I got hit with the exploit (I don't remember the details) that crashes a service and activates the 1-minute shutdown timer.
The problem may also lie in one of the programs you are installing or running after you reload - some viruses can modify an executable to still appear to function properly, yet contain code to replicate itself in the rest of the executables on the drive.
You say your modem doesn't support XP - did the system ship with a different operating system than XP, and you tried upgrading it?
You can usually find drivers for the device to work with XP, and if it's that old that it doesn't support it at all, you might be better off getting a cheap winmodem (Should be about $20 to $30 at a shop, mine charges $24.99)
alionic's suggestion of a low-level format is not a bad idea, but my experience has been that simply deleting all of the partitions in Windows Setup, and creating new ones or letting it recreate one works perfectly fine.
I would personally not count on being able to use any EXE files you might have had saved on the drive, or another drive connected to it after the problem started. Pictures should be ok, but be careful when you're copying them back.
