How do I get it? Get close to the subject and go wide (angle) or get far from the subject and zoom in?

Assuming you want the subject to remain the same size in the field of view, the answer is... it doesn't make any difference. For the same subject magnification, the DoF will be the same given the same f-stop, regardless of focal length.
