I was sitting my lounge last night, working on some photos when all of a sudden there was this huge bang on the window behind my head. It made me jump and I raced outside to tell my husband who was outside having a cigarette. At first we thought whatever it was broke our window, but then on closer look it looked like some kind of gooey substance. It seems someone shot paintballs at our house.
That really freaked me out. When we looked at the house, we also noticed that the siding, right near the window where my baby daughter was sleeping had also been hit and put a big hole in the siding. If it had been just a bit further to the left, it would have hit the window and smashed glass all over my five month old. I am a little shaken up about this today. Luckily the window that was hit right behind my head did not break, or I would have been hit in the back of the head. I cannot believe people do this. It just makes me want to go home to Australia.
We were wondering if it were random but our house was the only house that was hit. We are really quiet people and so this was so out of the blue. We questioned our teen daughter to find out if she thought anyone had it in for her but she couldn't think of anyone. I am so worried about my kids going near the windows now. My husband said he saw a small white car with a rattly muffler going by at the time. He plans to sit out in his car and see if they come back again tonight. We want to get their number plate down and hand it to the police. I know my husband is really mad and wants to find out who did it. He takes protecting us very seriously. Has anyone else ever had anything like that happen to them? I feel really violated.

I wish. I had some neighbors move in 9 years ago and since that time I have had a 30/06 bullit rip through one of my out buildings, one of my wild hogs shot through the leg with a .22 and one of my dogs shot through the lungs with 00 buckshot. Welcome to the US.

Troberge, I am sorry to hear what happened to you! I read the occasional thread like this, and it makes me feel bad that you guys have to deal with so much violence there. It must be scary. I know there are lots of benefits, but I guess coming from Australia it must be quite a culture shock!
Hang in there, hopefully you'll catch them! |

| Thanks for your supportive words Rae-Ann. Yes, I think it is a huge Culture Shock and I know my husband is worried now that I will want to go home. (I have thought about this many times this morning when I think of what could have happened if it had hit me in the back of my head or if it had broken the window over my daughter). I think we are very lucky that it wasn't worse. It's amazing, I am 35, yet I still want to run home to Australia to my mum. (mom for my US counterparts). |

Don't worry too much that you were a target. It could have been randome even though you were the only house hit. Maybe they just didn't have that many paintballs, or were spreading the joy further away.
Three weeks ago we found a 15 pound piece of cement garden edging through the back windshield of our car in our driveway. The cement came from our elderly neighbor's gaden. The street, Caroline Street, in Burlington, is very nice, but what we call a "teen drunk route". The "testostorteens" use Caroline Street to travel between home and downtown bars or house parties. Usually wealthy kids trying to impress each other.
Security lights don't bother them. :-(
Many kids that age don't have part of their brain fully developed yet, the part that understands consequences. It's actually true according to some educational TV show I watched long ago.
Thankfully for us we bought a new house on a quiet street. Tonight will be our last night on Caroline Street!
Good luck to you. I don't know what I'd do other than move.
:-(

Yes, I had something similar happen to me many years ago when I was living in NY City. At the time, I was sitting in a subway (train) car that was stalled between two stations above ground. All of a sudden we heard a crack on one of the door windows and could see that it had cracked the window, but not penetrated it. It was the door right in front of where I was seated, and I believe it was aimed for my head. Everyone in my car instinctively knew it was some kind of gun shot and all got down on their hands and knees and crawled to the next car. Though there were no other shots fired, we were all very shaken. Shortly thereafter the train started moving and we were relieved.
I"m sorry for your ordeal and hope that you made reports to the police, and even your local politicians, and let your neighbors know as well.
A few months back, here on Long Island, there was a famous case where a teen threw a 25lbs frozen turkey through the windshield of a moving vehicle on the Long Island Expressway and shattered the drivers face. He was sentenced to jail time, but the amazing part of the story was that victim forgave the teen and they embraced in court.

Mostly, the vandalism on my street has been with eggs and directed at my truck that's parked out front. However, I had 3 windshields and 2 side windows shot out with either a .22 or a pellet gun. The police come out, write a report and that's about it unless you get a description or a plate, there's really nothing for the police to go on. The sad part is that unless someone is seriously hurt, it's just not a priority for them.
If someone ever did hurt my family, they had better be damn sure they never get caught. I can forgive, but it'll take a lot of pain and suffering on their part for me to get there.

Hang in there - It's gets better (I know), go and have a Tim Tam :) Don't get too bothered unless it's a regular thing which is far less likely.

Well, I would embrase them alright - my hands would embrace them around the throat :-) I would hope they would get serious time for that but I rather doubt it somehow.
