I've been lusting after a good wide-angle and just had a chance to handle and play with Tamron's new 11-18 at National Camera Exchange in Minneapolis this weekend. I was put off by the $599 price tag, at least initially, but I'm wondering if anyone has had a chance to shoot with this lens yet? The review here seems pretty favorable and best online prices seem to be in the $570 to $590 range.

Both the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 ($499) and the Tokina 12-24mm f/4 ($500)are a full $100 cheaper than what they want for the Tamron 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6. The Tamron is $70 more than the Sigma or Tokina at B&H.

Maybe you should try the other two as well to see if it's really worth the extra $70 to $100. Both Sigma and Tokina are faster at the wider end, with the Tokina being a constant f/4.

Happy shopping.

EDIT
Just realized that you have the 10D. Not sure that body is compatible with the the Tokina, which is what I have. EF-S and like lenses don't work on the 10D since the mirror can hit the back of the lens, if I remember correctly.

Thanks BB, that's the kind of feedback I'd like. I assume you're happy with your Tokina? Works well with Canon body? Good build quality??

Just saw your edit. Bummer. I'll wait to hear more on this before I cross the Tok off my list.

The Tokina is a nice solid lens. Not L construction, but damn close. Works very well for me and I am extremely pleased with its performance. I've noticed some minimal chromatic abberation in some high contrast shots, but nothing too serious. I recommend it.

I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable members here can share this info with you. Kirbic has a wealth of knowledge and this kind of stuff. Maybe check with him?

As the perpetual shopper, I added it to my wishlist based on this review

Tamron SP 11-18 f/4.5-5.6 Di II LD

Not lengthy, but a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Nah, Kirbic is pretty much a ditz. I'll wait for other knowledgeable members to chime in.

"But, unlike Canon's EFS lenses, such as its 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, which are limited to S mount bodies such as the Rebel/XT and 20D, the Tamron will fit earlier reduced frame digital bodies such as the 10D, D60 and D30. If you put the lens on a film camera, or a full frame digital camera such as the Canon 1Ds MKII, you will not get a usable image outside of the APS-C sized format area. This lens is designed for current 1.5X and 1.6X digital cameras only."

"If you're looking for an ultra-wide zoom for your 1.5x or 1.6x lens factor DSLR then I can recommend the Tamron SP 11-18 f/4.5-5.6 Di II LD to you. The price is attractive and the lens is capable of producing high quality images. If you are the owner of a Canon D30, D60 or 10D, and therefore unable to use the Canon 10-22mm lens without performing warranty destroying surgery, the new Tamron provides an attraction option."

Go for it, I say. Looks very nice to me.

Hoo, $600 for the Tammy 11-18? Boy, that would give me pause. Especially as Mr. Atkins noted that CA is visibly present, and this is a pretty darn slow lens. The alternatives for 10D owners, however, are not all that plentiful. The real performer seems to be the Canon 10-22, but 10D owners need not apply, since it's EF-S :-(
Of course, you could always do what this guy did... not!
I'm certainly no expert on the super-wides, after all you are reading a post from a guy who still owns a Tamron 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 that hasn't seen light in months, and isn't likely to again on my bodies. Hmmm, perhaps John's assessment above is closer than I'd like to think? ;-)

Maybe I should make you an offer on the 19-35? It's not as wide as I'm looking for but if the price is right???

For you, the price would be "really right!" I can honestly say I really liked this lens on the 10D, and on the 5D, well, let's just say that the edges are best left out-of-frame. If you want to try it out, I can send it to you, give it a good long test and then let's talk about price if you're satisfied with it.

Edit: Fat fingers yet again...dang, I'm the world's worst typist!
