Trying to put together a holiday trip to Arizona. Looking at flying into Vegas, driving to the Grand Canyon, stay two nights at a lodge on the south rim, see the sights, and then drive down to Tucson to visit the in-laws.

Any suggestions, ideas, or warnings? Looks like nine days total with a lot of day hikes in the Catalinas. The Mule ride into the canyon is out. I don't want to lose the 15 pounds required for mule riding.

I used to live in the Phoenix area - so most of my thoughts are about Phoenix stuff.

In the northern area, East of flagstaff is a town called Holbrook, and just south of there is the petrified forest - you would get some very interesting pictures there. Flagstaff is very cool; and definitely don't miss Sedona (do a pink jeep tour if you have the time). There is also a nice ride on some smaller roads past Sedona through the mountains (not highway), to go through Jerome (cool artsy town) and then into Prescott. Prescott has a nice downtown.

South of Tucson, there are some wineries that are cool. Also, I went to Tombstone, which is the place of the OK corral shoot out. That was fun as well.

And if you will be spending any time in Phoenix, let me know, because I have tons of ideas for you (and some great restaurant ideas as well).

Thanks Aeli and AzCKelly. Don't know why I didn't think of it sooner, but its wayyyyy cheaper to fly into Las Vegas and rent a car for the week than to fly into Arizona. I'm thoroughly impressed with AZ and hope to find a job with Ford out there someday (Yucca or Phoenix). Until then, we'll just keep visiting the in-laws and taking photos.
