Can Windows XP Professional be installed on multiple computers? Or do I need to purchase a new OS for a new computer?

So it's definitely illegal? I was hoping you were allowed to install on at least two. Oh well.

Yes, you need a separate copy of the OS for each system. Don't pay the full price, you can legally purchase the "OEM version" if you purchase it along with a hardware item that qualifies; it doesn't take much to qualify. you should end up with a price around $130.

umm. because it's illegal? not something you want to have if the IRS does a serious audit I've heard.

I think you can install on multiple PC using one install CD, but you need to BUY the license for the other PC's.

give MS a call to confirm

Volume License

Well yes, it's the licenses that are the issue rather than the actual CD it comes from - but if you're just talking about 2 or 3 PCs then volume licensing isn't going to come into the equation (and to be honest I'm not sure they'd even talk to a consumer anyway)

If you have an older version of windows lurking you should be able to save some money buying an XP upgrade rather than the full product; it'd need to be 98 or ME by the looks of it.

I was under the impression that if you bought XP Pro (which is a business application) then you have the rights to use it on your home machine as well. ie. your using both machines for yourself (business and personal)

MS is only going to let you do that if your big bussiness, some ive my clients tried asking but they were knocked back on 20+ computers, it might be different in the US though.

Getting an OEM is probably the cheapest way so if you computers supplier will sell you one (doubtful unless he is dodgy) buy it otherwise make friends with the staff and save the money ;)

Some of our staff used to sell to clients who buy a few cheapish parts i.e HDD, FDD etc

MS policy in Australia with OEM is the customer has to purchace a full Machine or 5 Major Components
