I just thought I would post this for anyone interested. I've been keeping track of the number of prints I've been making with my new R1800. I am just now replacing an ink for the first time. Since getting the printer early September, I've made the following:

101 greeting cards on Red River GreenPix cardstock (5x7 image printed on the front with a "recycled" logo and my info on the back.)

5 8x10's on Ilford Pearl

5 5x7's on Ilford Pearl and

4 sheets of business cards on my own cardstock

Since I received this warning (see below), I've printed 16 cards!

Since it's appeared as empty...

...I have still cranked out 5-6 cards with no color change. Finally, after printing my last card, it has told me it's empty.

Since the very first low ink warning on Cyan I've probably printed (this is a guess) 40-45 cards in total. So, it's really worth it to milk it for all it's worth. Not with large images, but smaller ones in case you do run out. There's more ink in there than you would waste by ruining a 5x7 image.

Just thought I'd share!

There's a reason for that: the inks are transferred from the cartridge to a reservoir in the printhead. The cartridge is empty, but the printhead could still be full. It's liek a safety margin. You may safely replace cartridges without fear of waste when the display says they are empty. You will run into clogging problems if you run the printhead reservoirs dry, so trying to stretch it is not a good idea.

Thanks, bear. I didn't run any after it told me it was empty. I didn't change the cartridge at the first sign it was getting low, though...only when it officially said it was empty. I just meant when it says there's 20% left or looks low you should keep printing because there's quite a bit of ink in there.
