I have to say I honestly hate going to a mall or shopping. I worked in retail for 12 years and managed a retail store for 10 of those years. I know it’s hard on the customers but it is very hard this time of the year on the employees. The day before Thanksgiving we would have to stay hours after closing to merchandise the store for black Friday. The we would have to be at the store around 4:00am in the morning on Friday and work till 12:00am that night with only one lunch break, usually only 30 minutes.

And that was just the start, from the Friday after Thanksgiving till the first week in January we would work all day, usually from 8:00am till 10:00pm, six or seven days a week. Christmas eve we had to work from 7:00am till 7:00pm, off on Christmas, and back in at 8:00am the day after Christmas. We called the week after Christmas the thirteenth month because sales were good during that time as well.

Then came the first week in January and it was inventory time. Usually taking three days. When we transmitted our inventory results after working 36 hours to get it done we just crashed. And it took about two months to for us to get over the Christmas season.

Was it fun? Yes and no. I learned a lot about people and learned that working that amount of hours will harm the body and make you not want to fight the holiday crowds.
