The comment he left you was his first comment so go easy. Perhaps his monitor isn't calibrated or whatever and to him he could have done better??? Not sure what he meant tho. I'm not fond of the color of the gloves tho.
Edit to add: I like the rest of the photo and I personally don't think there is anything wrong with it but then again what the hell do I know.

You lit the shot with on-camera flash; consequently the lighting is very flat and unnatural/uninteresting. If you want to do flash photography, it's worth investing in a speedlight with a rotating/swiveling head so you can bounce your flash and get a better light.
The composition is very awkward, particularly in that there's a support beam jutting out of the boy's head, but also in that the image is cropped too tight, especially to the gloves and to a lesser extent to his head, so it feels cramped.
Sharpness is good, expression is good.
Selective desaturation isn't really working here, IMO. Perhaps if you muted the gloves a bit, so they are a more somber blue, this would help. Consider having a trace of color in the rest of the image, also, just barely saturated.
Each of these areas I have addressed was also addressed by your first commenter. Don't be too hard on people who point out the negatives without offering suggestions to fix them. It takes a lot of work to offer tips, much more work than just noting problems. Be glad that he noted the problems for you at all.
Robt.

Thanks Bear music.
Thats been a great help! I will invest in a speed light and welcome all comments as this is how i will learn. Personally, although i know nothing to bragg about at the moment i thought it looked ok for my effort but with a little help like you have given me in your comments hopefully i will improve my photos.
Thankyou for your time!! |

You're welcome. Be sure that the Speedlight you buy is a "TTL II" version. That's what you need for the 20D. Canon makes a serviceable on for around $200 (420EX) and a more full-featured one for around $300 (430EX). The 430 is the one I have. They also make more powerful speedlights (550EX and 580EX) but they are quite a bit pricier.
Other manufacturers make decent speedlights also. I'm not expert on them though.
This was shot with the 430EX bounced:

The comporsition needs to be thought of a lot more to achieve the desired effect.
this is just my opinion.

Well at least he stopped to give his opinion. Personally, I agree with everything he said.
