It's only gone up 26% in 10 years! 2.5% annualized...

Sounds like a heck of a deal!

It's going to be a good Christmas for a lot of South Africans. For a change the gold-mines have not hedged everything and they can take advantage of the increasing price. Hopefully it will be sustained and some of the moth-balled mines can be re-opened.

Cheers

Give me a stream and a gold pan and if there's a flake of gold I can find it! :-D

Anybody ever go panning for gold? It's lots of fun.

As part of a summer job at he Ministry of Northern Development & Mines, while I was in university, I gave gold-panning lessons & demonstrations using material from an old placer deposit. Gauranteed gold for every tourist. You just have to get the hang of swirling the water around in the pan and you get a beautiful heavy-mineral separation.

What does the price of gold have to be before panning becomes profitable? Sounds like good pasttime!

I used to work for the Bureau of Mines (the whole Bereau was closed about 10 - 12 years ago with some budgets cuts - yes sometimes the government actually does cut entire budgets).

I would "pan for gold" almost daily in the lab - but it is much more fun in a river. Great fun with the kids if you find a place where there's a good chance they can find it. Their faces just light up when they find the "real gold!"

I'm surprised how many rivers here in utah have gold in them. I've panned many and always come up with a flake or two.

Back in about 1980 or thereabouts, gold briefly spiked to over $800 per troy ounce. I actually had about 4 oz. (actually 15 gal. of dilute solution containing gold cyanide salts) and just missed the peak, but still wound up selling it for $600/oz. =)

I'm the proud owner of a bunch of gold mining stocks. Bought it back when tech was flying high - right before the market crashed. Just waiting for the right price. :)

Yes, but could I get a cabin in the woods and wear one of these old cowboy hats and go panning every day and make a living from it?

Sure! You just have to find a nice, little deposit. You could set up a sleuce to get more gold faster, but that defeats the purpose of panning :-)

Just decide how much you want to make every day, refer to the current price of gold through my link above, and extract that many ounces. ;-)

Isn't that closer to 2.26% anualized? Anyway, your point remains. By comparison, an index fund tracking the S&P 500 would have gone up about 110% in 10 years, or 7.7% per year. Granted, stocks are a bit more volatile than gold. And not nearly as shiny.

Especially when it's your grandfather teaching you! Lots of wonderful childhood memories panning for gold with my grandfather.

Nordlys is comparing apples and pictures of apples. I've never been able to stick a pan in a river and find any stock certificates. :-P

Haha, good one! I found some fool's stock too. I found out that the old cliche "A fool and his money are soon parted." is very true.

Me too! It is called Travelzoo, and they gave away free shares of it in 1999. It split when it was still worth $0, and I now have six shares. It's been a wild ride.
