I'd love to get a few comments on this. It's my first attempt at a home studio. :)

My only gripe is not enough contrast. I'll send you a PM with my revision. I just raised brightness and contrast. |

If you were going for a more gothic/subdued type portrait then I think you've got a good start. However, the hands and face seem to pop out of nowhere due to the lack of contrast. Also, the catchlight in the eyes is barely visible.
One thing with portraits (most of the time) is to make the eyes the most prominent.
The pose seems slightly awkward (hands mostly) but the overall position in the frame is good. The tilt of the head makes for a good pose.

I just bumped the contrast and bright and it made a HUGE difference! Thank you .. I knew there was something missing just couldn't put my finger on it. |

Parrothead .. thank you very much for the comment.
No studio lighting. I had turned off the main overhead light in the kitchen, kept a smaller light on behind me and bounced my flash off the ceilling. I'd crop out the hands but I didn't want to loose the hair. |

needs curves/levels adjustment. contrast is less accurate and more destructive editing. you need some white in your black and white photo. |

Thank you petrakka and cpanaioti ... everyone has been such a great help!! I was more afraid of the lighting. As for the hands.. she did that herself, getting bored with my 100 photos of her :)
Edit to include a color photo I feel is a bit soft
