So I'm looking at the TC-20E 11 teleconverter for Nikon... and I have a few questions.
What will happen when I slap this guy in between my D70 and my Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG macro lens?
Will my autofocus work?
Will my matrix metering work?
Will I get 2:1 magnification? (This is what I'm really intersted in)
PLEASE let me know.
Thanks! |

I think you will have it all.

You should be ok on metreing and AF as they will work ok up to F5.6
Not sure what it will do to the magnification.
have you considered the 1.7? About 2/3 stop less loss. |

You will not be able to mount your Sigma to a TC-20E II. The Nikon AF TCs only work with Nikon AF-S lenses. They will not physically mate with a non AF-S lens unless you want to perform some minor surgery on the mount of your new TC. If you want to maintain AF with a non AF-S lens you need to go to a third party TC. The Kenko PRO and Tamron SP lines are the best of these. You can use the old Nikon MF teleconverters like the TC-200/201 which are designed specifically for lenses up to 200mm but you lose AF and metering on a D70. If all you really want is the 2:1 magnification and not the 200mm focal length, a set of extension tubes or a bellows unit would be much cheaper. However, you would lose AF and metering with any bellows and also with most extension tubes with the exception of a set made by Kenko which maintains electrical contacts, and hence metering and AF.

Eric is correct on the new Nikon TC's. My mistake. He is also correct on the 2:1 issue. Go with the Kenko Extension Tube Set:

If you still want a teleconverter look at Tamron. I have used the Tamron Pro 1.4 with my Nikon 70-200 2.8 and my Tamron 200-500 with no AF or metering problems. However, with the Tamron 200-500 lens (5.0-6.3) focus hunts at times. |
