Tired of buying CDs just to get one or two songs I like from them and not wanting to download iTunes encryted files on to my computer, but having a lot of troulble finding a legal download site that will run on Safari. Any clues?

Why wouldn't you want iTunes files? ALL legal downloads will be encrypted, so what's the difference?

First iTunes has no tech support to speak of. Second I don't know how to burn a CD with iTunes. (Burn button in the upper right hand corner?) Third iTunes downloaded files won't convert to mp3s.

I'm pretty sure not all legally downloaded files are encryted and controlled the way iTunes are.

The built-in help for iTunes is pretty comprehensive, so the need for tech support should be very minimal. Burning a CD is easy (yes, hit that button). Converting to MP3 is relatively straightforward if you need it: burn a CD, then insert the CD and rip to MP3 as usual. ALL legal music downloads are encrypted, the DRM software may be different, but it's still encrypted. Most commpeting standards are even more restrictive than Apple's.

That's not true.

You can check out emusic. I don't know if the site will work with Safari, but it does work with Firefox. They have a separate download manager for downloading the files.

Virtually all of the other major online music stores sell music encoded in WMA format. Apple's AAC files can be converted to MP3, though you have to go to some trouble (and some data loss) to do it. I've not had any problems at all with Apple's ITMS or iTunes software and would highly recommend it. Burning CDs is easy too. Just create the playlist you want to burn, and hit the burn button. It prompts you to insert a CD, etc., etc.

But with emusic, you only have access to their independent labels catalog, none of the majors. They also use a "hybrid" subscription service, e.g., it's not a true subscription service where you really rent the music, but you pay a regular monthly fee for the right to download X number of tunes.

If you really want other options, check out Magnatunes. They have a small but growing catalog of independent artists, tunes available in multiple formats, including lossless encoded songs and albums, and even better, you name your own price. That's right. Pay what you think it's worth. Check it out. I've bought several CDs from them. Worth looking at even though I spend lots more at ITMS.

Refer to the picture below;

Note that I have created a playlist named after you, and that I have that playlist selected. Look at the upper right hand corner of the window: burn, baby, burn.

Cute. Thanks. One problem, mine says Browse, not Burn.

It will say "browse" if you've got your library selected. If you have a playlist selected (as you would do if you're preparing a mix for a disk), it will change to burn.

On the other hand, I guess that this would assume that you've got a disk burner installed, and one that iTunes recognizes. This could be the problem, I guess. Works for me, always has, multiple computers.

You have to create a playlist from the music in your library, then the "Burn CD" icon appears.

I just highlighted them. Duh! That worked. Why couldn't the Apple instructions have stated it in such simple terms?
