I know that this can be done. Anyone know how to turn white in to transparent in a jpeg file?
I know if you save it as a gif this would happen but I would not want to go this way.
Thanks in advance.

Jpegs cannot support transparent pixels.
The major options available are gif and png.
The benefit of png over gif is that pixels can have an alpha value allowing for different degrees of transparency in the image. Gif images only allow for binary transparency (on or off).

the jpeg format doesn't support transparency.
Edit: Ooops got crossed with the previous post, and yes I agree with the PNG option. Be warned if your doing if for the web that MS IE has some difficulties with alpha transparencies.

I'm assuming you're trying to save a transparent file for a web page? If so, I usually try to avoid transparency for the above mentioned reasons. Usually what I do is match the background of the image to the background of the page (when possible) to avoid these particular problems. If your image workspace is white and your web page background is black (for example) you will also have problems with a white "halo" around your image even if you save it with a transparent background. This is caused by the alpha settings getting a little "confused" when differentiating between the image and the background where they meet and blend together.
My $0.02 USD.

is there something else you are trying to have it transparent for like maybe a powerpoint presentation or something? If you are using it in a Office program such as word or powerpoint you can click the image and a picture toolbar should show up, there is a tool in there that you can use to click on a color and it will become transparent. Not sure if this is what you want it for but thought I'd offer it.
