Texas, maybe, but Texans won't get any part of the settlement -- it will all go to their state. (There would need to be a separate class action lawsuit to collect damages and the cost of removing the spyware.)

Only the tip of the iceberg, I expect. Sony is going to be in a world of hurt over this one, and rightly so.

They ought to be in two worlds of hurt. One from the lawsuits, and hopefully prosecuters. The other from consumers. The legal stuff will take years and may not have any benefit for most of us. But a boycott of anything Sony can start right away and would send a clear message.
I still haven't heard anything about Sony offering any help to people who's computers were damaged. You'd think they could at least post something on the web telling how to get your `puter back to normal.

Of all that an apology would be nice.

Do you think they have done enough for the consumers they have injured? I don't. Even after they get the software patch out it will not leave your computer as it was before they put the virus/spyware on there with their infected discs. It will only tell the disc to disregard the copy protections. You'll need third party anti-virus software to get rid of it. I guess Norton and McAfee are going to benefit some as a byproduct of Sony's screwup. And how can you ever trust Sony again?
I say the best solution is to boycott all Sony products.

all a virus coder had to do was name thier virus
$anyword$anotherword and that name pattern was enough for the file to become hidden under the sony hijack into your pc. That means that even antiviruses would not have been able to access the folder and warn you of a virus/trojan/backdoor.
I strongly suggest everyone, but especially people who have any cd/dvds/software from sony runs a anti-rookit program and makes that sony has not opened this little safe haven for internet attackers on your computer.
I will never trust sony products on my pc. |

"...work by security researchers suggest that a vulnerable ActiveX control in Sony's DRM uninstaller is a greater security risk than the original Sony rootkit" See //www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/17/sony_drm_uninstaller_peril/
Note also that Sony infringed the copyright of code written by "DVD Jon"
See //www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/18/sony_copyright_infringement/
There's another copy protection scheme Sony uses from Suncomm, see //www.freedom-to-tinker.com/?p=925
