Hi guys,
I had my triptych entry in for days last week. The final evening for submissions I realized that one of the three shots in my intended entry was actually linked to this thread I Want To Be A Getty Girl, which many DPCers had viewed. Not sure why it didn't occur to me earlier in the week, but it didn't. So I pulled my submission a couple hours before voting started, triptychized the best shot I had for the day and dumped it into the challenge (where it failed miserably).

My question... Was I correct to pull my original submission?

Edit to mention, the photo wasn't actually IN the thread, there was a link in the thread to my website and the pic was there.

Can't say if it's right or wrong, but I would have done the same.

Cindi,

there is no mistake when ethics are in question. No, you didn't. If you felt for a brief moment that submitting this photo would be unethical, then it is.
You can ask questions such as 'was it worth it', or 'should have I done it anyway' for the sake of 0.75-point or so differential in the total score, and that would be debatable.
But no, not a mistake from the ethical perspective, and I support you right there.

I have never thought of entering something I have previously posted on dpc. Although it obviously has been done before on occasion. I would agree with your decision.

I think you did the right thing, no question about it. I wish everyone here at dpc had the same high level understanding of ethics as you have demonstrated.

I think that you probably did the right thing if you were worried about it in your own mind, (your conscious is usually correct). If you'd kept it in there and got a good score or ribbon you may have wondered and maybe worried forever about whether it was cause they had seen the image and knew it was yours.

I myself, have just hidden a picture in my portfolio because it is very close to what I have submitted for the free study challenge and didn't want to give it away...not that many people like me or would vote for me like they would others if they knew the artist. ;)

By the way...very nice image.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I thought it the right thing to do, glad I'm not the only one.

Silliness.

I would have taken the photo out of my portfolio or something and let it go. My fourth place From the Ground Up photo was a re-shoot of an earlier shot that had about 30 views, plus a few comments. Skiprow noticed, but I think he was the only one.

I guess if there were a LOT more than 30 views it might be something to consider for the sake of anonymity. But it was only one third of your triptych. Your triptych shot above is REALLY good, and the challenge is worse off for not having it entered.

Anonymity is suggested, but not a rule. Some people say that entries are scored-down if people know who entered it. I think it's a line of BS simply to try to keep the challenges anonymous. Which is something I do appreciate, because, for-wild-example, if Heida & I submitted "identical" shots and voters knew who submitted them, they'd give her much higher scores simply because they all know that she knows what she's doing, and I'm just a silly fool doing it for kicks.

In summary...

I guess you have to let your conscience be your guide. Since you're more of a known-quality-entity than I, I guess our situations are different, as people might score you up, rather than down. But, IMHO, I would have preferred to see your entry in the challenge, especially as it's the first challenge I've voted in for a while.

Even if I had already seen the previously-linked image, I still would have score it fairly, which could be a debate unto itself.

I'm going to have to vote you off the island now. ;-)

Thanks, Skip! :P The thread that my pic was linked in had over 1000 views - good chance more than 30 ppl saw my pic. Anyway, maybe next time I'll think about my challenge entries BEFORE I start a forum thread! lol

Chalk it up to spazziness!

Whoa, 1000, sheesh! OK. But I still say you cheated DPC even more by not entering it. And if I don't vote you off the island now it's only because I'm afraid you'll send me an invoice.

I'm going against the herd on this one.

To quote from a poem of mine, "An almost senseless edge / between me and the heard..." :-)
