I was wondering if in 'advanced editing' where it states that you may use layers, does this mean that a new layer for a new background is allowed or does this mean that only layers such as 'adjustment' layers may be used.
I am fairly new at this, so be kind if this has been covered before.
Thanks!

Any kind of layer at all is allowed in advanced editing, and all the different layer modes may be used as well.

You can use regular layers as well as adjustment layers in advanced editing. This way you can use masks, blending modes, etc...

Not sure what you're getting at with 'a layer for a new background'... But, remember, there's also a rule that you can't add or remove any major elements.

and you can only use one photograph -- you can't "layer" two different shots together

By "layer for a new background" she might mean one of two things:

1. A duplicate layer from background, on which she will then work. And yes, this is not only legal but sensible.

2. While I had assumed she meant the above, it occurs to me she may have meant to create a new background on a separate layer, whether by importing another image or by using a gradient or a solid color or even some filter to produce an oddball effect. And no, this would not be legal per: major element and single-image rules.

Thread hijack attempt:

as long as we are discussing editing and SC is alive and well in this thread, how about commenting on these edits:
See this thread

I am not interested in the appeal or technical quality of the photos I used to illustrate the concept - just if the concept is legal under advanced editing or not.

Thanks!
