Are you using external or on camera flash? Assuming that you are using on camera you can soften with something covering the flash. Typing paper, tissue, etc.

Post some shots. Is the flash simple too bright for their eyes or the pictures are overexposed?

My pictures look fine. But my subject is complaining that it is too bright. I tried both with onboard and the sb 600. I get more complaints with the sb600 |

Are you shooting in a very dark place? |

the SB-600 pointed directly at people will practically burn out their retinas. you need to bouce it off the ceiling or use some kind of diffuser.

Im taking it inside a dim appartment. Its not like DARK but pretty bad for photography. I have tried bouncing the flash off the ceiling with the same complaints. |
