I have always thought of buying a canon as I have never been satisfied with my Kodaks, but then I always change my mind at the end because of the enormous amount of posts about faulty lenses of Canon digicams(also here in dpchallenge). I am also afraid of the infamous E18 bug.
Is this anti-canon drive has substance or is it blown out of proportion.

But now I must start thinking about my next cam, which must be something like a SLR, and the big question is...should it be a Canon or should I play safe and go with Nikon or Olympus.
Good pic is the last criterion for me, but I also want some satisfaction with the life and performance of the thing I will invest so much into.
Advice?

The "E18 bug" is an issue with the Canon point and shoot cameras, where the lens refuses to extend on powerup. I've been in DPC for nearly a year now and don't recall it ever having been mentioned in here, though it might have been. For what it's worth, the problem does not relate to Canon dSLRs at all.

I've had some Canon cameras in the past, and I've never had problems with any of them..

I started with the Canon EOS 500N 35mm film camera, then I went digital with the Powershot G1, and upgraded to 300D, then 20D and a few days ago I got the 5D, they've all worked great, I've taken more than 100.000 pictures since I bought the 500N 8 years ago, and never experienced any problems with them, and image quality is super... even with the 3.1Mpixel G1 :)

Never heard of E18, but my G2 is sitting here "dead" with this exact symptom. You mean there might be a software or recall fix?

You just do a search in google with canon e18 and see. You will also find(may be the very first hit) a site which is preparing a big database about and how to cure E18.
