I have a rebel XT and want a lens. I want a 70-300mm w/ macro setting and I do not want to spend more than $225. I know this is low, but I want to know what people recommend. When commenting, keep the $225 in mind. Do not recommend the L series, I know they are great but too expensive. |

ive done a lot of research. right now the top choice is the sigma 70-300 APO macro super II. whats your thoughts on that one. I find it hard ot get good opinions of these because people tend to compare the $200 range lenses with the L series, which leads to horrible reviews. These reviews are no use to me because I know the L series are better, but I can't afford it. I want honest opinions of lenses in the $225 range. |

If you have to stick with your budget, your choice is pretty simple. Forget about review and comparaison with L glass. Try finding comparaison between similar Sigma, Tamron and regular Canon glass.
I have a friend who own the Sigma you are refering to, but the Nikon one. He is happy with it and from what I have seen of his pictures, it looks like a good performer.
Based on reputation, from what I have read, I would go with Tamron first and then Sigma. I know Canon makes a 75-300mm that may fits your budget; if it does, you may want to consider this one first. Canon glass may not be better than Sigma or Tamron, but it will hold it's value much better.
Don't forget to look around on Ebay. There's tons of lens there. I have bought and sold many lens this year on Ebay (of course I am a Nikon guy). Some lens I bought, I resold for the same or even a bit more. THey do retain a good value. Even my Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 was bought on Ebay.
