Hi Kyle. . .You need to have an external flash. You can't really bounce a flash if you are using the flash that's built into your camera because it only points one way. If you have one that you attach to your camera it pivots in all different directions. Often you will get a much better looking light if say, you point the flash at something other than directly on the subject so that it hits that Other thing and bounces more subtly onto the subject. It's not so harsh and bright. Even a piece of white poster board held to one side of your subject can work great if you aim the flash at the poster board and position the subject so that geometrically, the flash will hit the poster board and bounce towards the subject.

Bouncing the flash simply means having the light (flash) hit something else and reflect back to the subject. For example, pointing the flash toward the celing so the harsh bright light hits the celing first and a softer more diffused light bounces down on the subject. It solves the problem of flash being toooooo bright. Reflectors can also be used to bounce the light.

I use to use a Rebel all the time and that's the flash I used with it, the 420EX. I also use that same flash now eith my EOS 20D. It works great.
Good luck!

Yep, I have the 300D and use the Speedlite 420EX flash. It's pretty easy to use, not much to it really. I've been happy with it so far. :-)
